The Leeds & Liverpool Canal is the longest man made waterway in Britain. It was the main artery for the Industrial Revolution and for the growth of Liverpool in the 18th century. When commercial traffic ceased in the mid 1960′s the link with Liverpool Docks was lost.
In the 21st century, the Leeds & Liverpool Canal is being developed into a major tourism and leisure attraction providing opportunities for boating, canoeing, fishing, walking and cycling, supporting many major events and educational activities for both communities and visitors alike.
Liverpool’s world famous waterfront offers huge potential for the successful, sustainable regeneration of the city centre, generating real economic and tourism benefits, improving the environment and the public realm and creating a positive local and international image.
British Waterways is actively involved in the renaissance of Liverpool’s waterfront and is currently looking at a number of opportunities with various partners. One of the key opportunities is the creation of a new canal link around the Pier Head.
Of course many of the men that were commissioned to build the Liverpool canal will be long dead, but their families will be proud of them for what they achieved, In fact many of the families which will be retired. You can find information on retirement here at this website. click here
There are four proposed routes (see right) and over the next few months you will have a number of opportunities to give your opinion on these routes, and to indicate your preferred option.
The new canal could help to create 190 new jobs, attract a further 200,000 visitors annually to the south docks and increase spending in the area by £5.5 million, according to an independent economic assessment by Liverpool-based Amion Consulting.
This is your city and your opinion really will have an impact on the final proposal that is implemented.
